Commander's Brief

Business ideas, jobs for veterans, and other cool stuff for ex-military.

I just took a job.

For the last few years, I’ve been doing some entrepreneurial things, but none of them have been flying away for me.

And so when a firm approached me, asked if I wanted to join, made me a great offer, I said “yes”.

I won’t be public about it, yet, but it will involve recruiting veterans for senior leadership roles.

Was too good of a fit for me to say, “no”.

Some will say I quit.

Nah, just regrouping.

More to come.

Veteran Business of the Week

Many moons ago, I had Paul Huszar on my podcast to talk about VetCor.

VetCor is a fire/water/mold remediation business that franchises to veterans.

Here is my quick pitch on franchising:

  • Veterans do exceptionally well in franchises. I have had a number of veteran franchise owners on the podcast and they tell me every year at the franchise’s annual convention, the top-performers or newcomers are almost always veterans.

  • Franchising is great because you get a playbook. Like a military manual, the franchise’s SOPs give you a 60-70% solution, and you are expected to fill in the last 30-40%. Veterans are used to operating in a system like that and are likely to do well. Franchises LOVE veterans for this reason.

  • Very importantly, joining a franchise comes with a support network. Unlike a stand-alone business, you have peers as a franchisee. When you have a problem, you can call up someone at corporate or another franchisee in another market and seek support. That’s huge and part of why veterans do well- they are back on a team.

Here are some quick thoughts also on remediation businesses like VetCor.

  • This is a MUST-HAVE service. If someone’s basement gets flooded or they have a fire in their kitchen, they need it fixed NOW. So these businesses can charge a premium and get great margins.

  • Typically, your core customer is really the insurance company. If you can be the go-to service in your area (meaning, you answer the phone and do what you say when you say you will do it), then the insurance company will likely keep coming back to you.

  • Because this is an “I need this NOW” kind of service, expect that work will be done on weekends and nights. When you are getting started, this likely will mean you as the business owner. But over time, you can implement systems to delegate this.

I like Paul a lot and what he does for veterans. If you have any interest in franchises, VetCor is a good one to check out.

I started using Monarch Money to finally get my finances organized—and honestly, it's a game-changer. If you want to get on top of your money, too, check it out here.

Resource of The Week

On June 10-12, 2025 Google will host Google Veterans Career Week 2025.

I have been a speaker at this before, and here is what I really like about it:

It is not just a Google recruiting event.

The event is run by veterans at Google, for veterans.

They use the Google brand and reach to promote and get great speakers, but it really is just focused on helping veterans in their careers.

It’s also free.

Definitely recommend checking it out.

Business Idea of The Week

Content Repurposing Service

  • Description: Offer a service to repurpose existing content (e.g., turning blog posts into social media snippets, videos into podcasts, or webinars into e-books) for small businesses or creators.

  • Why It Works: Requires no heavy development—just basic editing tools and content knowledge.

  • Scaling Potential: Start with a few clients and scale by hiring freelancers or automating workflows. Demand for content amplification allows rapid growth within six months.

The ideal customer here is someone who has a podcast or a blog, but wants to repurpose that content for something else.

As someone who has a podcast, I can tell you this take time to do.

I could take my podcast and make it into a video, publish the transcripts, turn it into reels and TikTok videos….but it takes a lot of work for someone who is not a full-time content creator.

So I could outsource it.

Good news here also is that these can be monthly recurring contracts, a nice place to be.
