Commander's Brief

Business ideas, jobs for veterans, and other cool stuff for ex-military.

This week I was a guest speaker at my friend Alex’s community, Master the Military.

I gave a presentation on entrepreneurship, which you can check out here.

(As a note, there are some really bad AI-generated images in there. I thought they were kinda hilarious so I kept them.)

He is building something very cool and you should go hop in.

Veteran Business of the Week

Ever used AirBnB? Yeah, probably you have.

Or let me share an example from my time in the military: you PCS to a new base and don’t have a place to live yet. So you need a place for 1-3 weeks.

Totally common.

That’s where Crewdogs comes in.

Think AirBnB, but just for the military community.

Here’s a snippet about them: I think it’s a cool idea. Check them out here.

Our mission is to bring the military community together to share homes, rooms, and spaces. Like you, we’d rather support another Vet, service member, or military family if given the choice. We also understand the community’s skepticism with anything online, especially travel related. Crewdogs keeps it simple: lower fees so there’s a no need to ask for a military discount, verify every user to add trust, and support Veteran causes nationwide.

Resource of The Week

There are a number of groups out there to help veterans access higher ed.

Probably my favorite is Warrior-Scholar Project

They run academic boot camps and college success workshops to help prepare enlisted veterans for college after the military.

Since I have been running The Veteran Professional, every alumni of their program has had nothing but stellar things to say about them.

The number one thing I hear about what they do is give veterans a feeling of confidence that they can succeed in the college classroom.

That’s huge.

I know I have readers here who are still active duty and are likely leaders. If any of your folks are getting out and planning to go to college, let them know about WSP.

Business Idea

This is not a new idea.

Does anyone remember Veterati?

They were an awesome mentorship platform for veterans that unexpectedly shot down in August 31, 2024. As far as I can tell, no one is quite sure why although there does appear to have been a recent cyber attack prior to the shutdown.

I used their service a few time to match with and connect with people as I was leaving the army.

It was great. They had some super successful people on there who just volunteered their time to help veterans. I learned a lot.

So here’s the idea: re-start it.
