Commander's Brief
Business ideas, jobs for veterans, and other cool stuff for ex-military.
Last week, my first boss from the army called me at 9 PM on a weeknight.
He just wanted to say, “I’ve been seeing you on the podcast. Great work!”
And then we chatted for 15 more minutes.
This is a guy I haven’t worked for in 10+ years.
(Of note, he is taking command of a battalion in the 82nd on May 28th, and I am planning to be there at Ft. Bragg for the ceremony.)
I often hear from people, “All the good ones get out of the military.”
Well, let me tell you, he is one of the best. And I know many good officers and NCOs still serving.
We are still in good hands.
Quick favor: If you like this newsletter, share it with one veteran friend. I would love to connect with more veterans on here.
Veteran Business of the Week
Especially if you have desire to build something in the world of defense, you need to know about Veteran Ventures Capital.
They, along with a handful of other funds, specialize in investing in veteran-founded companies, especially ones with a national security focus.
VVC does serious investing, so don;t approach them with the back of the napkin idea, but if you are a serious builder, they are worth looking into.
Resource of The Week
And if you are a veteran entrepreneur, you should know about Warrior Rising.
Their story:
“Founded in 2015, Warrior Rising is a non-profit started by Veterans, for Veterans. The Warrior Rising team has a singular goal: transform Veterans into Vetrepreneurs. We have achieved this through carefully selecting strategic partners in business, and leveraging a vast network of young professionals and successful entrepreneurs from a wide variety of backgrounds. The organization hosts a robust team of professionals, business owners, and experts in their fields.”
I have had a number of podcast guests (including Gabe and Lindsey, published today) who worked with them and only speak their praises.
I started using Monarch Money to finally get my finances organized—and honestly, it's a game-changer. If you want to get on top of your money, too, check it out here.
New Stuff

Gabe and Lindsey are both Army veterans with impressive backgrounds, he an infantry officer and she was one of the first women in the 160th.
After leaving the Army, Gabe started a fire/water/mold remediation business, scaled it to $1 million in a few years and then sold it, while Lindsey is an MBA student at HBS.
Oh, and they are married. Power couple.
Right now, they are building Oply. Here is the pitch:
"Just like your car tells you when to change the oil, Oply uses intelligent technology to tell you what your home needs next. Your Oply Home Score tracks the health of every major system—giving you predictive insights and helping you fix issues early with vetted pros, all in a tap. Oply thinks, predicts, and acts for you—so you can enjoy your home with peace of mind."
